A therapeutic foster parent must:
+ be available for a child 24/7, and provide appropriate supervision when not in a school setting
+ transport a child to appointments (i.e. doctor, dentist, therapist, treatment team, etc.)
+ participate as a parent and advocate for a child in the school
+ involve a child in community activities while holding confidential their medical and personal information
+ be part of a team whose sole purpose is to help a child achieve his or her goals by providing the skills, instruction and opportunity to do so
Therapeutic foster care helps children by:
+ supporting any additional services while in care (including transportation)
+ building communication and social skills
+ reducing risk of negative behaviors
+ advocating in school meetings (parent/teacher conference, IEP)
+ providing academic assistance
+ providing supervision in a safe, less restrictive environment
+ attending and participating in all treatment team meetings
+ coordinating therapeutic leave and home visits when approved by the treatment team
+ preparing a child for their return to their home environment
To be a therapeutic foster parent you must:
+ be at least 21 years of age
+ be able to read and write and follow verbal instructions
+ be willing to accept a child as a part of your family
+ have at least a high school diploma
+ have a valid NC driver’s license
+ have a vehicle with current DMV registration, license plate and liability insurance
+ have sufficient income for your family’s financial stability
+ have a working land-line telephone
+ provide a child placed in your home with:
+ enough personal space
+ a personal, permanent bed (no futons or hideaways)
+ personal space in a closet
+ personal space in a dresser

+ provide all of the necessary training
+ provide supervision on a weekly basis
+ be an active participant of the treatment team
+ be accessible for information, assistance and ongoing communication
+ include you in the planning for a child to be placed into or removed from your home
+ pay a daily rate for services
+ provide health insurance cards for children
